~ MASKS ARE REQUIRED – FULTON COUNTY SCHOOLS MANDATE ~
Tonight brings us a match up of city rivals only 6 miles apart. The rivalry continues tonight with both teams inaugurating 1st year head coaches in both teams season openers. Lots of questions sure to be answered tonight as both coaches are excited to get going after months of changing times & transitioning into their new roles.
The Knights are excited about a fresh start with 1st year Coach Sean O’Sullivan coming over from his HC position at North Atlanta HS. Their excitement is centered around key players WR Drake Mason, WR Julian Nixon, OL/DL Peyton Major, OL Sebastian Orozco, DT Jordan Marks, CB Jaden Lewis, DE Evan Walker, DE Jordan Gates, RB Nathan Webster, OL Jake Wilbanks, OL Daniel Calhoun and QB Zaire Goff.
The Hornets are led by Chris Prewett who moves into the head role from last years position as defensive coordinator. Success in his new role will center around key players WR Marquis Willis, WR Michael Fitzgerald, OL Corey Robinson, OL Anietie Ntekop, OL Trey Roth, OL Trey Lednik, LB Evan Plunkett, LB Harrison Duncan and S Dillon Holifield.
I recently had a Q&A with both coaches discussing their preseason preparations & tonight’s game.
What is your biggest area of concern about your team heading into the first game?
Coach O’Sullivan – “The players come to work and Compete everyday. They have been working hard since we were able to get together in June.”
Coach Prewett – “I believe our biggest area concern is the lack of game like scenarios that you would normally get through team scrimmages, spring games and fall scrimmages. Our offensive side has a lot of guys that are returning and have some experience but our defensive side of the ball doesn’t have as many game like reps so we will have to learn as we go through the first half of the season.”
What has been your team’s strengths that have come to light during your preparations for the season?
Coach O’Sullivan – “Not necessarily a concern but looking forward to seeing where we are as a team. It is always good to get a baseline of where you are at in all three phases of the game. Until you play in a live situation it is hard to tell what you are good at, need improvement on, and what you do not do well..”
Coach Prewett – “Through our summer workouts and fall practices, our staff has been very impressed with our Offensive Line. We have some returning experience mixed together with some younger players that haven’t played a lot from 2019 but the whole group has shown a lot of promise, toughness and an attitude. This is exactly what our staff is looking for out of our entire team. Our Offensive Line is the most humble and hard working position group on our team.”
Has anyone or anything stood out as the most surprising or unexpected positive during preseason workouts?
Coach O’Sullivan – “We feel that the team has gotten a lot stronger since June and they have worked hard in the weight room and on the field.“
Coach Prewett – “If I had to choose one particular group that has surprised our staff during the preseason practices, it would have to be the Running Backs. Our running backs have continued to work hard through our practices and have produced some outstanding plays. This group has the luxury of being behind a fantastic Offensive Line and have been vital in our Offensive success this preseason.”
Any thoughts on how COVID as impacted the preseason – good, bad or general?
Coach O’Sullivan – “We preach to the players all the time about controlling what we can control. We feel that we have adapted to changes and protocols that came with Covid-19. We are just excited to be able to suit up and play this Friday.”
Coach Prewett – “Fulton county has done an outstanding job on giving our program all the appropriate guidelines and regulations we need to have a healthy and safe workout or practice environment for our players and staff. I think COVID has probably changed a lot of opinions about cleaning, sanitizing and regulations that we normally had in place without COVID. Our players and staff have been incredibly flexible about guidelines and regulations that are always changing so credit to our players and staff.”
Any final thoughts on the game, the season?
Coach O’Sullivan – “I am looking forward to the 2020 Season! GO Knights!!!”
Coach Prewett – “My hopes for this upcoming season is that our seniors have as close to a “normal” football season as possible. This group of seniors is very special to me. When I came to Roswell in 2017, these were our upcoming freshman so I have seen the growth, maturity and progression of all of these young men. I know this is a hard working group of seniors and this team is going to work tirelessly to achieve their goals during the 2020 season.”
Thanks to both coaches for their time & input. Looking forward to kicking off the season and wishing both teams well in tonight’s match up!
