The Hornet Football Team was put to the test in the Quarter Final round of the AAAAAA State Football playoffs by a well coached and determined Collins Hill team. The 3rd seed out of Gwinnett’s Region 7 proved to be more than a formidable foe for the Hornets. The 5 loss Eagles challenged the Hornets three times in the 1st quarter when they were the recipients of tremendous field position due to a first play interception and return by an Eagle Defensive End, a subsequent short punt by the Hornet punting team and an Eagle punt return to the Hornet 30 yard line. The Hornet Defense was up to the task holding the Eagles to a mere 3 point field goal on those three possessions. A Hornet 7 to 3 halftime lead was thanks to Kendrick Jackson’s catch of a tipped pass in the end zone for the Hornets. In the 3rd quarter, a successful Hornet field goal and a TD pass by Collins Hill saw the score tied 10 to 10. This was the first time Roswell had not held a lead in the 4th quarter of a game all season. After the Eagles punted the Hornets to the 6 yard line the Offensive Line and the sheer determination and will of Hornet Tailback Sheldon Evans led the team on a game winning 94 yard drive with 7 first downs. The deciding touchdown by Hornet QB Quintarrius Neely was an amazing 17 yard tight rope run down the sideline with Quintarrius dancing around the end zone pylon for the game winner. A last ditch attempt by Collins Hill was stopped by the Hornet Defense when Strong Safety Marcellino Ball intercepted a pass allowing the Hornet Offense to run it’s Victory formation to end the game. Final score Roswell 17 Collins Hill 10.
Roswell advances to the AAAAAA State Semi-Finals for the first time since the 2006 State Championship season. The Hornets will be facing Region 8 Champions Grayson High School. The Rams defeated Westlake High School in the quarter finals to advance to the Semi’s.
